Eye cream is such an essential part of an effective every day skincare routine yet so often overlooked. Many think that using a regular facial moisturizer is enough when hydrating their skin but it’s not! The area of skin around the eyes is much thinner than that on the rest of the face and we have minimal oil glands in this area so it needs to be hydrated with something more emollient. This is the first place we show signs of aging so it needs to be treated well! A regular non-comedogenic moisturizer is not commonly made to use around the eye area and can lead to irritation as well! In addition to hydrating the skin around the eyes, an effective eye cream will give you anti-aging benefits and brighten your eyes due to under eye dark circles or lack of sleep and minimize puffiness.
And let us make this clear…men and women should be using an eye cream. We at Acne Skin Site believe anyone age 16 and over will benefit from using one. So what active ingredients should you look for in a good eye cream? It depends what benefits you want. For filling in fine lines and wrinkles, look for silicone. Caffeine is known to help reduce puffy eyes. Vitamin K, over time, will help to lessen dark circles and brighten the overall eye area. And to stimulate collagen growth, alpha hydroxyl acids or retinol will do the trick. Always make sure to discuss any concerns or questions you may have with your dermatologist and ask for another recommendation if you are allergic to something mentioned above. If you would like to use more than one eye cream to receive maximum benefits, discuss mixing of products or ingredients with your pharmacist or dermatologist.
It is necessary to apply eye cream morning and night to receive the maximum benefits and to protect your skin from damage during the day and to restore your skin at night. Use your ring finger, which is next to your pinky finger, to apply the cream because it is found that the least amount of pressure is applied with this finger. Make sure to gently tap the eye cream around your eye area, from below the eye to the top of the brow bone and around your temples to just outside your hairline in that area (where crows’ feet form). Don’t pull or tug at your skin because that will cause premature lines and wrinkles. If you decide to use the eye cream on your eyelid, (consult with your doctor first), a concern we’ve heard quite a bit is how to keep eye makeup in place. Use an eye shadow primer after applying eye cream and before applying eye shadow and it will help hold your makeup in place and will not settle or “gunk up” in your crease. Our personal favorite here at Acne Skin Site is Urban Decay Cosmetic’s Eye Shadow Primer Potion.
So what are you waiting for? Invest in a good eye cream and take years off your face!
