Your needs
:

Start by making a list of everything you need from your glasses.

  • Why and where are you planning to use them?
  • Will you be using them near water or snow? (best to choose polarized lenses)
  • Do you want a wrap-around style to reduce glare?
  • Do you have a particular size and style in mind?
  • Do you need a specific tint to suit your needs?
  • How strong is your prescription? If it is strong, then glass may be very heavy?
  • Will you be using them for tennis or other activities where shatter-proof lenses are important?
  • What coatings do you want (anti-glare, scratch resistant, ….)
  • To you want photochromatic lenses (lighten and darken as needed by themselves

The benefits:

Remember the benefits of wearing good sunglasses. The most important thing is your health. By blocking the UV rays you can actually protect your self against many eye diseases and skin cancers. It is important to get lenses with a high (UV400) or 100% UV blocking rating. Ensure that the UV coating covers both UVA and UVB radiation. There are other bonuses besides just the cancer and eye disease prevention.

  • Prevent sun damage to your skin (so many people end up looking like leather by not paying attention to this)
  • Reduce lines and wrinkles – partly due to reduction of sun damage, but also due to a reduction in the need to squint when you are in bright sun.
  • Good glasses do look great (see the cat above)
  • You can actually see what is going on. Even simple things like crossing the street could be deadly if you can see properly.
  • …speaking of seeing what is going on - it’s easier to check out the hot person near you at the pool too!
  • Less squinting leaves you significantly less fatigued after being outside

Beware of the tendency to cut corners and get inexpensive glasses – or to simply rely on off the shelf glasses and contacts. First of all, although cheap glasses may feel ike they are doing the job, lack of proper protection, which is not possible for you to detect), may actually give you a false sense of security – leading to more eye damage and skin damage than you might get otherwise. Second, cheap glasses will rarely give you the same comfort level of glasses that are properly selected to meet your needs. Third – you get what you pay for – so if you want them to last make sure you buy quality. Finally, contacts are not suitable for all situations – you may not want to wear them sailing (where you could end up under water) or skiing (where the cold dry air might make them unsuitable).

Shopping for Sunglasses:

Use what is available to you. Do research on the internet to read about what you need and the choices you have. Then go to a store that really specializes in glasses (not just a kiosk selling fashion accessories). Try on a wide range of glasses to see what you like, and be sure to ask questions about anything that is unclear. Make sure to ask about the total price you will be charged so you are not fooled by any unadvertised elements. Ask if you can take a pair or two outside into the sun to actually see how they perform in real light. Consider bringing your boyfriend/husband/friend with you to get feedback as you try on glasses. Maybe even take pictures of the various styles on your face so you can see what they really look like when you get home.

Choose sunglasses to suit your face. Try on many pairs

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, come back here to find out why buying your glasses on the internet can be a real money saver. This helped me out, and I knew that I was spending money on getting the right features and quality rather than simply covering overheads of a store and a franchise.
